The Secrets to TikTok Content Marketing: How To Grow Your Profile

Tiktok is known for its entertaining content and blackhole, resulting in hundreds of hours of content consumed. While the LBD Digital team has been scrolling we see lots and lots (and lots!) of tips on how to grow on the app. Since TikTok is still fairly new and creators seem to be getting pretty innovative with the ways they market on the app, we wanted to test all the popular tricks out to see what works best. So, keep reading to nail your TikTok content marketing strategies.

Consistency Is Key

To test these TikTok marketing strategies, we logged into the LBD Digital TikTok page and officially set it up with its own content strategy.

Our experiment began with becoming very consistent with uploads. We shared as many as three posts everyday from the 4th May-4th July, to see how our views would be impacted. We saw our average views go from under 100 to the average being 600 per video over the two months. Considering the account only had 50 followers, it definitely meant our content was being pushed out to a new audience.

So, it’s safe to say that posting consistently is definitely one of the most important TikTok marketing hacks to follow if you want to grow your account.

The TikTok Algorithm

The way the TikTok algorithm generally works is upon first posting a video, it will automatically be pushed out to around 200 random viewers, and how they engage with it determines whether it will be pushed out to more. This means that the more likes, comments, reposts and saves it gets, the more likely it is to reach a large audience. You may have heard the term “200-400 view jail”, this is what it’s referring to.

Why Posting Consistently & Engagement Is Important

Posting consistently and engaging on the app are the algorithm’s two best friends. We noticed that the more we posted, the longer our videos would stay on people’s For You Pages (FYP), hence, leading to more views on average.

Engaging on the app for 10-20 minutes straight after posting is also important. This not only tells TikTok that you’re active (so it’s more likely to boost your content), but commenting on videos and following similar accounts is a great way to make connections and those accounts may support your posts as well.

If you’re short on time, our favourite way to utilise this time on the app straight after posting is to research trends or even create more content to post later. This way you’re still engaging on the platform but also being productive. However, if you also want to take this as an opportunity to lay on the couch, open a packet of chips and mindlessly scroll for a bit this works too!

If you don’t have time to post and engage on TikTok everyday but still want to be consistent, don’t fret! You can schedule posts via your computer some days a week, and post directly to the app on other days when you have more time. Just make sure to be posting directly to the app and engaging most days of the week, because it is the best way to get lifted in the algorithm, especially when you don’t have many followers.

Posting Times Do Matter

They certainly don’t matter as much as on Instagram, but we’ve found that sharing content at similar times in the day definitely makes a difference. For multiple accounts we’ve managed, posting from 4pm-9pm AEST seems to be when most people are active.

The TikTok algorithm has gone from pushing trending audios to trending topics. Make sure topics you’re discussing are relevant and interesting to not just your followers, but anyone who may be watching your TikTok from the FYP. From our analytics, the average watch time for a video is typically only 1-2 seconds, meaning each only has a few seconds in the limelight (A.K.A. the attention span of your viewer), so make sure your topic is made prevalent from the beginning through a hook. Interestingly, while this is the case for most content, if your video’s topic becomes trending some time after posting it, it may suddenly get pushed out again.

Creator Search Insights

Finding trending topics is where Creator Search Insights comes in handy. To access it, type in “Creator Search Insights” into your search bar, and the first or second option to come up should be these words listed with the word “View” to the right in a red box.

Creator Search Insights

Broken up into “Suggested” and “Trending”, it will show you the topics that everyone is going crazy for on TikTok. “Trending” gives more general ideas, broken up into categories such as food, fashion, sport, tourism and more. However “Suggested” has responses more tailored to your niche. It has three categories: “All”, “Content gap” and “Searches by followers”, but “Content gap” is where the jackpot is. Here lies all the topics that people have been searching for a lot on TikTok, yet not a lot of users have been posting about them. “Searches by followers” is also helpful for finding out what your followers are interested in, however you need at least 1000 followers to access it.

If you see a topic with a red upwards pointing arrow next to it, this means that there has been a recent influx of people searching for it, so these are also good to look out for.

Creator Search Insights gives you a variety of trending content ideas in a matter of minutes, but it’s easy to get overwhelmed. We recommend hitting the save button on ideas you want to use, then after you’ve finished looking through them go into your saved and write a list of them in one place.

TikTok Studio

TikTok Studio is where you can track your insights and results. Separated into “Analytics”, “Monetisation”, “More tools” and “Content inspiration”, then broken up into trending and recommendations, it acts as an extension of Creator Search Insights but giving you more specific ideas.

The feature is still very new and only gives results also tailored to what your audience is engaging with once you reach 1000 followers, but we’re excited to see how it will help small creators.

We’ll admit, all the sections can be a bit overwhelming upon first glance, but we recommend making use of the “Analytics” and “Content inspiration” tools to get started.

What’s the difference between Creator Search Insights and TikTok Studio?

It’s easy to get these two mixed up, but the main difference is that Creator Search Insights helps to find ideas that align with your brand or campaign goals, while TikTok Studio is a creative toolset for your own TikTok videos.

Finding TikTok Content Ideas

This is probably the hardest part especially if you’re planning to post everyday. A combination of using Creator Search Insights and just scrolling through your feed makes the process much easier. Using both is effective because Creator Search Insights gives you an idea of what’s trending for everyone and (thanks to TikTok’s highly personalised algorithm) your FYP will give you specific ideas relating to your niche. While both will show a variety of content either way, we’ve also found that Creator Search Insights provides more educational content and your FYP provides more humorous content and fun trends users are partaking in.

It might help to set aside one slot of time for content research using Creator Search Insights and another for scrolling your FYP. For example, if you want to engage on TikTok for 20 minutes that day, you might spend 10 minutes going through Creator Search Insights and 10 minutes going through your FYP for ideas.

The Ultimate TikTok Posting Schedule

One post per day is the best option for if you want to stay really consistent and grow on TikTok, and it’s easier to maintain than you might think!

Here is a weekly schedule example for sharing content to TikTok everyday. Feel free to alter it to whatever works best for you or if you don’t want to post everyday.

Another great thing to keep in mind is how you can recycle content to share on other channels too.

Other Things We’ve Noted

If you’re keen to experiment even further with your TikTok profile and content marketing strategies, here are some other micro strategies that we’ve noticed to be working. Of course, these are not proven to work for everyone because it depends on your audience, however they might still be fun to try out.

  • Editing your videos in TikTok usually makes them get boosted in the algorithm. The app doesn’t normally like it when you’ve added text or other graphics within alternative apps.
  • TikTok pushes content that gets lots of reposts and shares.
  • It’s important to put all key information in the video, and the caption is just to add extra information, keywords and hashtags (because let’s be real, who even reads captions these days anyways?).
  • Videos that show your face or you speaking directly to the camera tend to perform really well, because TikTok prefers personal, authentic content.
  • Use specific geotags and hashtags for higher reach.

Summing Up TikTok Content Marketing Strategies

TikTok definitely seems to be moving quicker than other social media platforms. However, people tend to think its rules are changing a lot faster than they really are. The base structure of face-to-camera talking and minimal edited videos established around 2022 (when the app was first getting super popular) still apply. Practising traditional TikTok content marketing strategies like these is a great starting point for doing well on the platform.

As many business owners know, growth takes time. This is also the case for growing on social media. It may seem like popular creators had overnight success, but trust us, it takes a lot of patience, experimenting and platform knowledge to get to where they are. At the end of the day, good content that people enjoy always performs best and overrides “flash in the pan” marketing trends. So remember to enjoy yourself while creating, and your audience is bound to enjoy it too!
